Alone in the Dark (wczęśniej piąta odsłona nosiła podtytuł Near Death Investigation) jest kolejną częścią popularnego cyklu, zapoczątkowanego w 1992 roku i kojarzonego przede wszystkim z PeCetami, aczkolwiek niektóre odsłony serii pojawiły się też na innych platformach (m.in. 3DO, PlayStation i Dreamcast). Omawiany epizod powstał natomiast zarówno z myślą o komputerach osobistych, jak i o nowej generacji konsol.

Ponownie mamy do czynienia z przygodową grą akcji, mogącą bez wahania stawać w jednym rzędzie z innymi hitowymi markami z gatunku survival horror (np. Resident Evil, Silent Hill i Fatal Frame alias Project Zero). W roli głównego bohatera znów występuje Edward Carnby, czyli prywatny detektyw, specjalizujący się w prowadzeniu dochodzeń, zahaczających o tematykę paranormalną. Tym razem protagonista trafia do nowojorskiego Central Parku, aby odkryć tajemnicę życia po śmierci.

Developerzy przygotowali mnóstwo napawających grozą lokacji, wśród których znajdują się m.in. spowite mrokiem zagajniki, ścieżki spacerowe pomiędzy klatkami ogrodu zoologicznego oraz wnętrza okolicznych budynków (teatr, restauracja etc.). Naturalnie na eksplorowanym przez nas terenie spotykamy bohaterów niezależnych, reprezentujących rozmaite grupy społeczne. Rozmowa z postaciami pozwala oczywiście na poznanie szeregu sekretów, skrywanych przez warstwę fabularną.

W odróżnieniu od poprzednich części, w Alone in the Dark na pierwszy plan wysuwają się elementy akcji. Mowa tu głównie o walce (zarówno na dystans, jak i w zwarciu) z hordami przerażających monstrów oraz o unikaniu pułapek i innych nieprzyjemnych niespodzianek. Rzecz jasna pojawiają się też zagadki logiczne i sytuacje, w których konieczne jest bezszelestne skradanie się w cieniu.

Warto zauważyć, że autorzy postanowili zorganizować zabawę w sposób, przypominający telewizyjny serial. Scenariusz podzielono zatem na liczne epizody (ukończenie każdego wymaga poświęcenia raczej minut, niźli godzin), połączone nastrojowymi sekwencjami przerywnikowymi. Co ciekawe w momencie ładowania zapisanego uprzednio stanu gry prezentowana jest scenka, ukazująca skrót wszystkich wcześniejszych wydarzeń. Całości dopełnia wysokiej jakości trójwymiarowa oprawa wizualna (m.in. realistycznie padające światło) oraz system fizyczny, bazujący na technologii Havok trzeciej generacji.
